In this project twenty-first century students narrate the legacy of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. After spending a semester discussing the history and fictional representations of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), students write a final essay that portrays the experiences of a selected Lincoln Brigade volunteer.
Students problematize the borders between history and fiction by interpreting archival documents, recording memories, and focusing on personal narratives. Most importantly, in their written projects students become active agents of generational transmission for the Abraham Lincoln Brigade members. They contribute to their memorialization process by transmitting the volunteers’ histories and life experiences.
